Favorite cereals and stories

We all grew up on them. Did you have a favorite, one you just couldn't get through the day without?
I had a few, Wheaties, Cocoa Wheats, Grape nuts, Cherrios, the only new one I had added after all these years, is Blueberry Morning.

One night when I was young, my sister and I made a big pan of chocolate pudding and we decided it would be fun to put Alphabets in it, for whatever brilliant reason, and eat them out until the pudding was gone, this went on for quite some time. Now Alphabets was never one of my favorites to begin with and by the time we got through that big pan of pudding and the box of Alphabets, we were ready to puke.

To this day, I can't even eat them or look at them.

Yeah, I think most of us had similar experiences here.....
Cereal companies would put something on sale and penny-pinching Mom's would give it a try.
Wheaties, Cheerio's, Kellogg's Sugar Frosted Flakes were staples in our house.
Hot Cream of Wheat was a treat. Oatmeal was tolerated.....don't know why, 'cause I love it now.

As we consumers have become more aware of what we are putting in our family's bodies, cereal companies have improved their product, ie.: "Total".

I bet we'd be surprised to look at the sugar content in a box of Alpha'Bits or Sugar Frosted Flakes from our childhood!

Breakfast? Never had the time in the mornings before the bus came. Sometimes Ivan Duke would even have to honk the bus horn to get me out there!

But I do remember the school lunches! We'd all line up outside the old building with our lunch tickets in hand. Boy, was I hungry by lunch time!

Do you remember your favorite lunch? I loved the chili & peanut butter sandwich lunch on Wednesdays (I think). Then there were always fish sticks on Friday!

We're talking major nutrition for growing bodies...ha!

Gosh, you are making my hungry, I think, by far, the best thing to come out of Mrs. Lindley's kitchen was the yeast rolls. Wow, I loved working in the cafeteria, because if there were extras, we got them.
When I look and see what kids are eating at school now, we were fed pretty good. I loved the chili there also.

You're right GH. We didn't have pizza & sodas. I remember when the school installed vending machines in the gym. Guess what we could vend? Apples!!!

And, I can smell those yeast rolls! I'd forgotten about them. Your memory is amazing...Mrs. Lindley...I am in awe of your memory bank!

That is so funny about Marty, I bet if he read that, he would be mortified to think that is what you remember about him. You are so right, he is a great guy. We started in the first grade together and he proposed to me then.
Back then Danny K was in our class also and wore white bucks and was so cool. He also had a pair of cool saddle shoes. He was a styling man, even back then.
One of the things I was leery of in the lunch room was the beef stew, but most everything was really pretty good.
I remember carrying our lunches also, I had a cool scotch plaid box, what about you?
Are you a Cinderella or Long Ranger kind of box person?

I think I had a Dale Evans lunch box but I may have dreamed that.

As for cereals, the only one I can remember is Captain Crunch in HS. Cornflakes and Cheerios were the norm before that.

My Grandfather would have eggs, bacon and sometimes brown sugar molasses,,, you make them by putting brown sugar in a sauce pan, adding enough water to make a syrup, then heating until it was thick.
THEN you pour enough on a plate to cover it, mash in a gob of butter or peanut butter, swirl it around. Now open a sack of bread and use as many slices as it takes so sop it up!

He was a thin, muscular man believe it or not! I can’t imagine how many calories he used routinely to be able to eat like that.

At school, my favorite meal was chili and toasted cheese. I was never a picky eater though. I keep hoping I will find a food that I don’t like. So far, the only thing I can’t eat is boiled okra and I don't come across that stuff often enough to count!

As far as breakfast cereals go. A bowl of Wheaties and milk w/a little sugar and a fresh banana cut up in it. And the morning comics. Sometimes had to fight for them, though. Mrs. Lindley could be a real sweetheart. If she liked you and you could catch her eye, she would give you extra. If she didn't like you - forget it. But, Was that really Chili and peanut butter sandwiches. All this time, I thought that was grilled cheese. Anyway, FG, one of my favorite lunches, too. Yeah yeah, FF and PT, I know - we'll have to have a talk...
Mom kept getting the Gene Autry / Roy Roger type lunch boxes for me, but what I really wanted was one like my Grandpa carried - just a plain metal (silver or black) round top lunch box. Heavy duty type. It would carry more. FF, I wish that I knew that Marty gave away Hostess Cup Cakes. They were high on my list. Just about all of that good stuff was high on MY list. Still is.....

GG, wish you could be here!

You are right about the grilled cheese sandwiches...with the chili. I do remember peanut butter sandwiches, though. They were kind of sweet, as I recall. But, my recall these days is very questionable...um...peanut butter sandwiches??
Lunch Boxes: that must have been grade school; I had the red plaid, generic version...no celebrities for me.
Oh, I would just die for one of those Hostess cupcakes right now!
