HAM & BEANS, POTATOES AND CORNBREAD

Do you have that one meal, that when you sit down and eat, it brings back all kinds of memories?
Maybe it was your favorite birthday dinner, or a holiday or whatever.
There was one that always stood out for me. It was ham & beans, potatoes and cornbread.
It was my dad's favorite meal and he would get into the kitchen and turn into Chef Tell.
He would cook and have so much fun and look forward to that meal with great enthusiasm.
When he was done cooking, he just didn't serve it up, oh no, he created a masterpiece, he would procede to pile the ingredients on top of each other and finish off with diced onions and banana peppers.
One night, he worked on his masterpiece for quite some time and when he proceded to take a bite, the plate flipped over into his lap. I thought he was going to cry.
We didn't know whether to laugh or cry with him. But he soon fixed another plate and went on his way to enjoyment.
I don't know if that meal was a leftover from his Navy days in a sub.

We had that same meal the other night and now my husband eats it the same way.

Thanks dad for a great memory.

Seeing your Dad with a plate of beans in is lap must be a priceless memory for you! Too funny!

When we lived back in the cabin, Mother made a big meal for Daddy's side of the family -- fried chicken, yeast biscuits, green beans, the works. She also had some Jim Beam on hand.

Her side of the family were teetotalers but his side enjoyed a drink now and then.

She was ready to set the table when she saw her mother walking toward the house and she was almost at the door.

In a panic, she put an unopened fifth of JB in a hot oven.

It was fun watching Mother trying to get rid of Grandmom without looking suspicious,,, or blowing up the house.

Must be something about that house, one year, being a newly wed, I wanted to have Thanksgiving back there, so I prepared a feast, inviting both sides of the family.
Just as we were getting ready to sit down with all the food on the table, one of those metal legs on the table, that used to be held with 3 screws, gave way....we all stood and watched dinner slide off in slow motion onto the floor. I cried buckets that night. But everyone was big supporters and salvaged as much as possible and we ate it.
