THE BARNFIRES OF OUR YOUTH

Do you happen to remember when all the fire depts. were totally volunteer? At our little one in the Valley, my dad was a member and one year we had the biggest rash of barn fires, always in the middle of the night. He would be gone for hours and come home dead tired, only to have to go to work in the big city.
I thought those fires were one of the scariest things, since no one knew why there were so many.
But when you are at that young age and can see those huge flames, it was frightening.
I always worried about the animals in them. And the losses for the farmers.
I wonder if they ever found the cause??

Ahh, you tweaked a couple memories with this post!

Bob Briggs barn burned when we were VERY young....8?
I think everyone attributed it to spontaneous combustion....he had put up hay after a rain.
The fire lit up the sky for miles.

Remember the movies at the Volunteer Fire House?
All the kids from the neighborhood came...the movie was free, but we brought change for drinks and snacks.
What fun!

Yes, I remember for a year there, there were so many barn fires all over the county.
I went to just about every movie they had at the firestation.
Do you remember when the older guys left one night and ran up ahead to the curve and hid in that big old tree with a sheet ghost to scare the bejesus out of us younguns. It worked. I was scared so bad, I ran all the way home from there. Then went back for more at the next movie.

You guys were so lucky to have lived in S'Valley! Seriously, movies at the fire dept. and the Bee Hive Restaurant!

All of you had so much back then and so many friends and so much to do in the area. Plus you were all safe to run like wild Indians!!! Not much danger going on back then. Good Times!

You are so right, we were so blessed and didn't know it then. I wouldn't sell those days for all the tea in China.
Aw. yes, the movies, so much fun and so scary walking down that scary dirt road back then. To look at it now, we would probably laugh.
